Names in gold background represent a technically 'Best-11' Aston Villa team, according to the following criteria (in this order):
Names in light-gold background represent consistently outstanding players who were fans' favourites.
These are listed in year order.

Names in silver background represent players that have served football with special distinction above just playing for the club.
These are listed in year order.

Names in bronze background represent further players that have provided much first-team service for an unbroken period of 10 years or more.
These are listed in year order.

Current (significant) players' names (not loan players) are shown in blue and listed at the end of the table.

These stats are as at the end of the last completed season.

Thoughts About Players Of Different Times

We did not see the players of long ago, so perhaps we need to take into account some of the circumstances of those earlier years in determining how good the old-time players were.

Firstly, players pre-1970s kicked a heavy leather ball. Even though some of the brilliance of recent players can be gawped at, some of that brilliance reflects the ball (and football boot) technology in use over the last 25 years or so. Football pitches, also, were primitive back then compared to today. When taking that into account, how fearsome must the famed shooting of 1930s player Eric Houghton (and 1950s Peter McParland) really have been? Even going back to the 1880s, really skilled players such as Denny Hodgetts were known for their ability to put 'skew' on the ball, and Bache and Hall 20 years later were a left-wing team famed for their ball-skills.

It is astonishing that Billy Walker held Villa's record number of England caps (18) until the very early 90s, when overtaken by David Platt. Billy Walker would have played at least 100 games for England if there had been so many fixtures in his day (England did not first enter the World Cup until 1950). A great playmaker, scorer and captain. It was only after his retirement that Villa entered the doldrums of their history. Yet, back in tho days of Walker, there were those who said he was not such an accomplished left-sided midfielder compared to the earlier players, Vaughton, Wheldon, Bache and Clem Stephenson.

And then there are the famous names of Villa's most triumphant period, in the 1890s. Particularly James Cowan, Howard Spencer, Charlie Athersmith, Jimmy Crabtree - topped off by the (apparently) wonderful captain - John Devey. If there had been European competition pre-WW1, Villa would most surely have carried off some of those trophies also.

Choosing an all-time side, therefore, seemed to me to involve considering length of service, international status and general contribution to Villa's success.

Though 1980-83 does rank as a great period in Villa's history, the pre-WW2 decades produced the highest achievements for Villa that could be achieved at the time. Different times and different footballing styles I know, but nevertheless producing masters of the art for their day. Also, some players had their careers severely interrupted by the World Wars, but would otherwise have achieved even greater individual success.

Hall of Fame and Table Of The Most Significant Players

Many player details have been lost, though it is true that statememt applies to mainly reserve and youth players.
However, it is not possible to attain a target of including, even, some players who played very few first-team matches.

The following table contains more than 300 most significant former and current Villa Players and includes
any player that has played more than 50 games or has played for England or remembered for their captaincy, personality or other distinct contribution.
Many details about Villa's England players are extracted from the England Football On Line site,
to which is extended my deep appreciation.
Playing stats are not shown for essentially pre-1888 players.
However, click here to see a more comprehensive Index of League Players since 1888
