Vessel: BETSEY

Journey: Wales to Barnstaple.
Vessel Type: Sloop.

A melancholy accident occurred in Barnstaple Bay on Thursday se'nnight which has plunged their families into the deepest distress. The sloop BETSEY was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in the Bay, in distress, when a boat from Appledore went to render her assistance, but in the violence of the surge, was unable to reach her. When the BETSEY endeavoured to cross the Bar, she capsized, and the master, his brother and a man named Shaddick, all unfortunately persihed. The hull of the vessel was driven in at Appledore the succeeding tide.
As a result of this tragedy, the North Devon Humane Society was formed under the patronage of Lord Rolle, a new boathouse was built at Watertown, and another lifeboat ordered from the RNLI.
