Alan Deakin

Alan Deakin, a Brummie, was a product of Villa's late 1950s youth policy that included the likes of Aitken, Sleeuwenhoek, Burrows, Tindall and Alan Baker, all of whom played a considerable number of games for Villa - particularly Deakin and the first three mentioned players - and made up the best part of 'Mercer's Minors'.

The peak of Deakin's career seemed to be in the 1962 to 64 period, and was highlighted in November 1963, when a well-motivated Villa side beat a Charlton and Law Manchester United 4-0. The match included the sending-off (then a rare event!) of Dennis Law as a result of his kicking Alan Deakin in the face after the latter had beautifully (but firmly) slide-tackled him. That was Deakin - superlative in the tackle; always fair and not a bad passer of the ball either.

Deakin played several times for the England U-23 side, and was unfortunate to have the legendary Bobby Moore as competition for the left-half spot! Thus Deakin did not break through into the full England team, and after 1964 injuries started to play havoc with Deakin's career, his appearances became limited.

One match in which Deakin had to play inside-left, because of the absence of several key players, produced a storming display from Villa after they were losing 1-5 at White Hart Lane in 1965. From this scoreline Villa finished the match 5-5 and Deakin was unlucky not to have scored the winner!

In company with several of the old 'Minors', Deakin was still with the club with their demise into the second division. Deakin eventually left for Walsall, a forgotten player of undoubted ability.
